HISTORY

Al Ma’soem Student Islamic Boarding School was originally named the Formal Education Islamic Boarding School and began construction in 2000. It operates under the legal authority of the Al Ma’soem Education Foundation, located at Jl. Raya Cipacing No. 22, RT 01 RW 05, Cipacing Village, Jatinangor District, Sumedang. The Foundation complex covers approximately 4 hectares and was donated as a charitable endowment (jariyah) by the late H. Ma’soem (passed away in Shawwal 2001), a successful Muslim entrepreneur from West Java, with the full support of his wife and children. At that time, his eldest son, the late H. Nanang Iskandar Ma’soem (passed away in Ramadan 2014), representing his younger siblings, dedicated himself to developing and expanding the Foundation as a form of charitable service. The Islamic boarding school was established long after Al Ma’soem Senior High School and Junior High School. The Senior High School was established in 1987, followed by the Junior High School in 1988. The development was funded entirely from the proceeds of the family business (PT Ma’soem), which had been operating since 1971, without financial assistance from external parties.

Initially, this Islamic boarding school was intended to accept students from elementary, secondary, and higher education levels, both from within and outside Al Ma’soem. This was intended to respond to the government’s policy of developing the Jatinangor area as an education hub. As a result, educators, lecturers, university students, entrepreneurs, and other members of the community were expected to move to this area. Naturally, they would need high-quality educational institutions for their children, with good educational services and adequate facilities.

In July 2001, Al Ma’soem Islamic Boarding School welcomed its first cohort of 49 Senior High School students, with 14 rooms already equipped with private bathrooms. At that time, however, students still managed their own meals and laundry. The boarding school curriculum focused entirely on classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning). Worship and religious learning activities were held in the AMIK building, which is now used as the Elementary School building. The boarding school was led at that time by H. Abdurrahman Lubis, assisted by four ustadz.

Along with the development of Jatinangor as an education hub and Rancaekek as an industrial area, as well as word-of-mouth information about the Al Ma’soem Formal Education Islamic Boarding School, the number of students continued to increase in the following years. They came not only from Bandung and Sumedang, but also from other regions such as Karawang, Bekasi, Jakarta, and even from outside Java. This growth required additional rooms and supporting facilities. By 2005, the boarding school had 129 rooms with capacities of 4, 6, and 8 students, accommodating a total of 550 students. This development was also supported by an increase in teaching staff, administrative personnel, catering services, facility maintenance teams, and other supporting staff.

In 2007, the Foundation decided to accept only students enrolled at Al Ma’soem Junior High School and Senior High School as boarding students, as public interest continued to grow. In 2009, Al Ma’soem Islamic Boarding School strengthened its commitment to becoming a modern Islamic boarding school that was not associated with being poorly maintained, harsh, outdated, or technologically disadvantaged. Implementing the tagline “Disciplined and Islamic” became the main responsibility of the management and everyone involved in the boarding school. This was reflected in improvements to catering and laundry services, disciplinary management, learning methods, information technology systems, and various student activities. All of these efforts were aimed at developing insan kamil, or well-rounded individuals, as expressed in the motto Cageur, Bageur, Pinter. Learning is not limited to studying classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning), but also includes materials that have been simplified into Indonesian while maintaining the distinctive traditions of Islamic boarding school education. Al Ma’soem believes that graduates who have been educated through this system will develop into individuals with high intellectual abilities and noble character, in accordance with the vision established since the institution was founded.

Learning Materials

1. Main Learning Materials: Qur’an and Tajwid, Fiqh, Aqidah Akhlak, Qur’an Memorization/Tahfidz, Arabic, Bahtsul Kutub/Kitab Kuning (Takhosus Class), English, and Nahwu Shorof. 
2. Supporting Materials (Extracurricular Activities). A total of 26 extracurricular activities are available for students of Al Ma’soem Student Islamic Boarding School (PSAM), consisting of: Arts, Imtaq & Science and Technology: 17 activities | Sports: 9 activities.
3. Parent/Guardian Visiting Hours at PSAM: Monday to Thursday: 16:00–17:30; Friday: 16:00–21:30; Saturday, Sunday, and public holidays: 08:00–21:30.
