There is this interesting program here at Yayasan Pendidikan Al Ma’soem (YPAM) that has been going on for a few months now, and that is; English Course… Well, that’s not very interesting isn’t it? In fact it’s a very common program that we can always found at any school in this country. Well the program itself (English Course) is common, but the people who are attending it are interesting.
Here at YPAM all employees have a duty to be able to use English as part of their daily activity. Therefore, excluding English teachers and few others who have an advanced English understanding, all employees of YPAM are obligated to attend an English class as part of their activity on campus. Of course all of these English classes are free of charge, and Yayasan Pendidikan Al Ma’soem didn’t take a penny out of it. YPAM provided the teachers and all of the facilities needed to have an English class, all they need to do as employees are attend them.
In 2016 Yayasan Pendidikan Al Ma’soem has this goal that the language they are going to use daily in campus isn’t just Indonesian but also English (bilingual), so everyone needs to at least understand English and capable of speaking a little bit of English. Also, one of the reasons why YPAM held the English course program is Asean Economic Community (AEC). Indonesia as one of Asean countries is going to engage in free flow of skilled labor across Asean, therefore in order to able to compete with any foreigner all employees at YPAM needs to be at least capable of using English language.
Twice a week all YPAM employees have to attend an English class, here they’re not just learning about the language they also learn about the culture and mannerism. This improved their English greatly, and additionally every month they also have an English Club that all the employees needs to attend. English Club is an event for all classes to perform and displaying how far their ability in English to other classes, it’s also a bragging right for the advanced class to show it to the other classes.
This English course program has been very interesting so far, employees who are rarely speaking any English in their daily lives are forced to learn English and participate in an English conversation with their peers on daily basic. Here at YPAM there’s an English hour, every morning employees are encouraged to speak English to anyone in order to further advance their English skill. This has been going on for a few months and you could see that their English has been improved greatly. To practice their English daily some employees sometimes speaking English outside the English hour that has been assigned.
All in all this English course program has been very helpful for the employees, we’re really encouraged to be able to learn and understand English. Though, most important thing is that they learn not to be embarrassed when they speak English to others.
